How do I check that the surface is level?

For your Tønsauna to be installed safely, the surface must be firm and level. Read how you can check that yourself here.

Before your Tønsauna can be installed, there is a flat, firm and level surface essential.

Do you already know that your surface is not level? Then read here's how to fix that.

Why a flat, level surface is necessary

If the surface is not flat, the sauna slippers are uneven and the sauna cannot be built properly. This increases the chance of woodwork, a skewed door or other issues. Moreover, it is simply more comfortable if you can sit or lie straight in the sauna.

Please note: when set up by our sauna builders, the surface must be level beforehand. If this is not the case, we will schedule a new appointment (with additional costs). In the case of self-construction or complete delivery, the warranty expires if damage is caused by the wrong surface.

Check the existing surface

Many gardens take drainage into account, so the surface often slopes slightly. Therefore, always check that the place where you want to place the sauna is really level.

Check existing paved surface

Is there already a paved surface, such as tiles, concrete or a deck? Then check as follows:

  1. Lay one level at various locations on the surface (corners, edges and center).
  2. Check that the bubble right in the middle state.
  3. Mark areas where it's not level — so you know where to update.

To do this, you can traditional level use, but a laser level gives the most accurate result.

Check unpaved ground

Is there no hard surface yet and do you want to know if the ground itself is level? Then you can do this in two ways:

Method 1: With a board and level

  • Place a long straight board on the ground.
  • Place one on it level and check that the bubble is in the middle.
  • Mark where the ground is higher or lower.

Method 2: with poles and a wire level

  1. Insert one into each corner of the area picket post. Place them approximately 50 cm outside the planned perimeter of the sauna. This way, you keep space to work.
  2. Between the poles, stretch a tight rope at the bottom. (Tip: If you've never done this before, search YouTube for an explainer video.)
  3. In the middle of the rope, attach a wire level.
  4. Move the ends of the rope up or down until the bell is exactly in the middle.
  5. So check every part of the wire. When everything is level, you can clearly see where the ground is still uneven.

Level the soil
