Do I still have to take care of the wood in the sauna?

The exterior of the sauna requires annual maintenance with oil or stain. You leave the inside untreated.

Our Tønsaunas are made from sustainable materials that last for years. Nevertheless, the wood has to endure a lot: heat, cold, rain and wind. That is why it is important to outside of the sauna to be treated once a year. This way, the wood stays in optimal condition and you can enjoy your sauna longer.

Outdoor treatment

Use only oil or stain and never paint or varnish. This is because sauna wood must be able to breathe. Paint and varnish seal the wood, causing it to deform, crack or mold.

A must is Tar Oil:

  • It is deeply absorbed into the wood.
  • Protects against rot and mold.
  • Gives a nice dark color and makes the wood water resistant.

Please note:

  • Wood must be dry and free of dust.
  • Make sure the weather is dry 2 days before and 2 days after oiling.
  • For a second treatment: sand lightly so that the oil absorbs better.

Inside of the sauna

The you never treat the inside of the sauna. Due to oil, paint or varnish, the wood can no longer breathe, causing moisture problems and fungi.

Here's how to do indoor maintenance:

  • Monthly cleaning with hot water or Sauna Clean.
  • Benches Sand lightly every year for a fresh look.
  • Hygiene: always go in with clean feet and use a towel on the benches. This keeps the wood clean and beautiful.
