Can I use chlorine in my hot tub?

Chlorine is very effective for water maintenance, but we prefer the natural Aqua Clean.

Yes, you can use chlorine in your hot tub. In fact: chlorine is the most powerful and effective remedy to keep the water in your hot tub clean and free of bacteria. However, the use of chlorine requires a little more attention and knowledge, because the right balance in the water is essential for safe and effective operation.

For chlorine to work properly, the alkalinity and pH value of the water in balance are:

  • Alkalinity must be between 80 and 120. This ensures that the pH remains stable.
  • pH value must be between 7.2 and 7.6. If the pH is too low, the chlorine breaks down too quickly; if the pH is too high, the chlorine works less well and skin or eye irritation can occur.

So use never more chlorine than prescribed and check the water values regularly. You can purchase small chlorine tablets yourself at hardware stores such as Praxis or Karwei, or order them online. We recommend using slow-dissolving 20 gram chlorine tablets. We do not sell chlorine ourselves.

Aqua Clean: A Natural Alternative

Although chlorine is very effective, we at Welvaere recommend the use of Aqua Clean to: one chlorine-free, environmentally friendly alternative that keeps the water clear and fresh without the sharp smell or risk of irritation. Especially when used regularly or if you are sensitive to chlorine, Aqua Clean is a nice solution.

Do you want to freshen up the water quickly? Then you can also give the water a chlorine shock give — you can read how to do that here.
