What kind of surface should my sauna be placed on?

A sauna weighs hundreds of kilos, which is why a firm, level and dry surface is essential.

A sauna is tough: our little one already weighs about 680 kilos and the largest goes up to more than 1,000 kilos. If you place it directly on grass or sand, it slowly sinks away. The result? A crooked sauna, poorly closing doors and more wood function.

That is why there are three basic rules for the surface:

  1. Sturdy: the bottom must be able to support the weight of the sauna for a long time.
  2. Level: if the sauna is crooked, there will be problems with assembly and may damage the structure.
  3. Dry: a wet surface accelerates wood rot and provides more maintenance.

💡 Please note: If the surface is not in order when delivered or assembled, the sauna cannot be installed. This means a new appointment and additional costs. The warranty may also expire if it appears that problems are due to a poor surface.

Possible surfaces

Terrace (stones or foundation)
A terrace is the most popular surface. Sturdy, easy to maintain and ideal for getting in and out. You can opt for pavement or a poured foundation.

Tiles under the beam structure
The sauna rests on a beamed frame. Place sturdy tiles under these beams. This way, the sauna is stable, while the rest of the garden can remain green.

Wooden decking
A sturdy wooden deck with a solid support structure is also suitable. This requires a little more maintenance, but gives your wellness corner a luxurious look.

Honeycomb mats with gravel
A sustainable option where the honeycomb mats form the basis and the gravel provides water drainage. It prevents sinking and you have a lot of choice in appearance.

Extra points of attention

  • Water outlet: make sure that rainwater can drain away so that the bottom of the sauna stays dry.
  • Electricity: An electric heater requires power. Arrange this before delivery.
  • Accessibility: keep space free around the sauna for installation and possible maintenance.

In short: always opt for a firm, level and dry surface. This way, your sauna remains stable, the materials last longer and you prevent problems with installation and use.
